An insiders guide to Waihī Beach

Waihī Beach is well worth the stop. Less than two hours’ drive from Auckland, and a short coastal drive north of Tauranga, this seaside village is packed with stunning scenery, amazing food and laid-back adventures. Here’s the inside word on how best to spend a visit.

1. Stay at Athenree Hot Springs & Holiday Park. This award-winning, classic Kiwi escape offers a range of accommodation options, plus geothermal hot pools to soak in after a day of exploring.

2. Take a walk. A favorite with locals and visitors alike, the walk to Orokawa Bay is a must-do, rewarding you with sweeping Pacific Ocean views toward Tuhua (Mayor Island). There are plenty of other walking tracks to explore too, including the Wetland Loop Track, Trig Track and William Wright FallsFind out more here

3. Post-walk, cool down with a Strawberry Iced Matcha or grab a fresh sandwich and coffee from Beach Road Deli.

4. Experience the beauty of Waihī Beach estuary by stand-up paddleboard or kayak with Waihī Beach SUP and Kayak - ideal for families or beginners.

5. Connect with locals and experience the restorative benefits of a traditional wood-fired sauna at The Sauna Project, best enjoyed with a dip in the ocean half way through.

6. Flatwhite is a must-do for dinner. Perched above the dunes, this Waihī Beach institution serves up a stunning menu anytime of the day. Or for a truly local experience, head to the RSA for a classic roast and some of the best views in town.

7. If a private sauna experience is more your style. Reset at Baask House, a modern wellness space designed for recovery and unhurried rest. Enjoy private traditional and infrared saunas and ice baths that will leave you feeling restored and recharged. Relax and enjoy this sanctuary by the sea.

8. Finish the day at The Secret Garden. Tucked away in the heart of the village, this tropical hideaway serves up Mexican street food and cocktails while live bands and DJs set the scene.
