EXPERIENCE Te Rere o Ōmanawa
Te Rere o Ōmanawa (Ōmanawa Falls) is a hidden gem just 30 minutes from Tauranga, nestled deep within the rohe of local hapū Ngāti Hangarau. After years of restricted access, this sacred site is now open to the public with a brand-new walkway designed to protect both visitors and the environment. Expect lush forest, cultural storytelling, and panoramic views of one of Aotearoa’s most awe-inspiring waterfalls.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Wander through an immersive ngahere (forest) walkway where carved pou and a traditional tomokanga welcome you into this special place. The upgraded track features three lookout platforms with stunning views over the 35-metre-high waterfall and the wider Ōmanawa Valley. Interpretive panels tell the story of the area’s deep cultural significance and the history of New Zealand’s first underground power station, tucked beneath the falls.
The track includes stairs and steep sections, so a moderate to high level of fitness is required.
Please stay on the marked track and respect the rāhui placed on swimming and off-trail access. This site is spiritually significant to Ngāti Hangarau and is protected under cultural protocols.
Once you've soaked up the views, head to Ōmanawa Café, located right by the car park. It's the perfect post-walk pit stop for great coffee, a fresh smoothie, cabinet treat, or something more substantial. Relax in the peaceful setting and take your time before heading back on the road.

Winter: 8:00 am to 5:00 pm (when Daylight Savings ends)
Swimming: No – there is no access to the water’s edge
