At the heart of the precinct is The Incubator Creative Hub, a thriving arts centre with 16 artist-run spaces. Here you can wander through exhibitions, meet the makers, and enjoy live performances at The Jam Factory. For hands-on creativity, check out one of the many workshops at the Creative Community Campus, covering everything from pottery and painting to textiles and upcycling. The Village Community Cinema is also worth a visit, with its art deco décor and thoughtful film selection making every screening feel like an experience.

Village Chapel

The Village is home to a treasure trove of local gems. Browse Awhi Company’s beautifully crafted baby blankets inspired by Te Ao Māori, dig through vinyl and music memorabilia at Record Roundabout, or admire the glittering mineral collection at Gems. History buffs will enjoy the displays in Faulkner House and the Village Chapel, and Village Radio offers a charming dose of nostalgia with its vintage station still broadcasting from the site.

Ichiban

When it’s time to refuel, there’s no shortage of delicious options. Market & Main, the Village’s newest resident café, is open daily from 7am to 3pm and serves excellent coffee, sweet treats and cabinet fare perfect for a casual bite. If you’re craving something heartier, Ichiban dishes up flavour-packed Japanese donburi and poke bowls, while Med Lounge & Garden offers Middle Eastern and Mediterranean flavours in a beautifully restored villa. Sit outside in the sun, sip something cold, and soak in the atmosphere.

What makes the Village truly special are the people behind it — the artists, retailers, performers and volunteers who bring passion, warmth and creativity to every corner. Strike up a conversation and you’ll uncover the stories that make this place hum.

The Historic Village also plays host to major community festivals like Diwali, Chinese New Year and the National Jazz Festival, and is a stunning location for weddings, meetings, expos and special events.

Entry is free and the grounds are open seven days a week from 7.30am-10pm.

Whether you’re visiting for an hour or staying all day, The Historic Village is one of the Bay of Plenty’s most memorable experiences, a colourful, creative stop that should be on every visitor’s list.
