With it’s buzzing mainstreet, stunning seaside paths and unforgettable dining,
it’s easy to spend the weekend soaking up the beachside vibes of Mount Maunganui.
From first light to last bite, we’ve put together a list of must-do's to fill a weekend
or weekday escape in this seaside paradise.
MORNING
Start your day with a stroll along the Marine Parade coastal pathway. This 3km walk begins at Hinekite (Mount Main Beach), curving through the dunes and alongside the coast with endless views.
Catch the sunrise from Moturiki (Leisure Island). This short, easy walk leads you to the northern tip of the island (which is connected to the beach) with views out to the Pacific Ocean and down the coastline towards Pāpāmoa. It’s perfect for tamariki (children) and easily connects with nearby Hopukiore (Mount Drury) for an extra climb.
Early riser? Fuel up at one of Mount Maunganui’s beloved coffee spots. Local favourites Sidetrack Café, Three One One Six, Special Mention and Tay Street Store serve up quality brews with laid-back surfside energy.
Join a guided oceanfront sauna session with The Sauna Project at Clyde Street. Alternate heat and sea dips for the ultimate reset — equal parts invigorating and grounding.
If brunch is your love language, you’re in the right place. Whether it’s an açai bowl, a flaky croissant or classic eggs bene, try Soul Boul, Gratitude Wholefood Eatery or Eddie’s Brunch Parlour for something worth lingering over.
AFTERNOON
Ease into the afternoon with a long, alfresco lunch. Tay Street Beach Kitchen, Mixture Eatery and Surf Road are local favourites. Tucked away, The Cruise Deck offers something for everyone - including Captain Bones and Sabal - while Little Guy delivers seriously good handmade bagels.
Spend the afternoon cruising Mount Mainstreet. With it’s relaxed feel and boutiques showcasing local designers, the streets are lined with vibrant stores best enjoyed at holiday pace. Be sure to check out design store Paper Plane or Nine Lives for some fun vintage finds.
If you’re an active relaxer, there is plenty to do to keep you busy. Try stand up paddleboarding in Waikorire (Pilot Bay), get a surf lesson at Hinekite (Mount Main Beach) or enjoy a round of golf at nearby Mount and Omanu golf courses.
Cool off with a swim. Pilot Bay offers calm, family-friendly waters, while Main Beach favourites like Shark Alley, Tay Street and Omanu deliver classic rolling waves.
No beach town is complete without great ice cream. Copenhagen is a Mount icon, famous for indulgent waffle cones. Sea People offers a delicious plant-based twist, while Mount Made and Polar Dessert Bar have flavours to satisfy every craving.
EVENING
It’s never too early for a drink when you’re in holiday mode, so try a cocktail at Sailor Galley & Rum Bar, Hide Thirst and Hunger or make your way to Best Behaviour rum garage to meet the maker and try their unique flavours.
For dinner, settle into Alpino for a sun-drenched Italian bites, or for a truly exceptional dining experience, try award-winning Solera and Fife Lane. Rice Rice Baby is a colourful crowd-pleaser or grab some a pizza from Rustica and picnic in Pilot Bay as the sun sets below the Kaimai Range.
